Take a moment to create an image in your head of the world record steak eater. What do you imagine? Chances are, you’re picturing a man, and a big one at that. He’s probably a very round but muscular man with a bald head and goatee and a stained white t-shirt covering an enormous belly and barrel chest. He’s not someone you’d want to mess with. The reality is that the world record for steak eating was set recently, and it was done by a thin woman named Molly Schuyler, who weighs 120 pounds and has no facial hair to speak of. She is, however, a competitive eater. She’s probably not someone to mess with either. Schuyler set the steak eating world record at Sayler’s Old Country Kitchen, a steakhouse in Portland, Oregon. The previous world record for eating 72 ounces of steak was six minutes and 48 seconds. Schuyler obliterated that record by finishing her 72 ounces of steak (4.5 pounds) in two minutes and 44 seconds. Then she went to work on her sides.
Sayler’s is well-known in Portland for its 72 ounce steak challenge. According to the Sayler’s website, the challenge was started in 1948 by Art and Dick Sayler, the restaurant’s founders. If a customer can finish the 72 ounce steak and all the sides, the meal is free. The challenger must eat two celery sticks, two carrot sticks, two olives, two dill pickles, one regular salad, ten french fries or a baked potato, one slice of bread, and all the edible parts of the 72 ounce steak. All of this food must be eaten within 60 minutes. To date, 571 men have completed the challenge, with 1,285 failing it. Since the challenge began in 1948, only eight women have completed it, with 39 failures. It’s clear that after beating the world record, Schuyler went to work on her sides in order to get her meal for free. Watch her obliterate the steak eating world record in the video below.
