Ford decided to redesign the Mustang for the 2015 model year. As we discussed previously, 2014 marks the Ford Mustang’s 50th Anniversary, so most observers expected Ford to release a Mustang that has a visual link to models of the past. In a lot of ways, that’s exactly what Ford did. The 2015 Mustang seems to take design influences from all the models that came before it. The slope of the rear window is reminiscent of the fox body Mustangs of the 1980s. It has the three vertical brake lights like the Mustangs of the 1990s. And the front looks like a more aggressive take on the models of the 1960s and the ’60s-inspired Mustangs of the late 2000s, the previous generation of Ford Mustangs.
Like with any redesign of a well-loved vehicle, the new Ford Mustang is going to have its share of detractors. Some criticism will come from individuals who love Mustangs but feel the redesign is too far of a departure from the car’s tradition. Ford has a chance of winning these folks over in time though. Other criticisms will come from folks who dislike Ford in general and who would under no circumstance buy a Ford. These people will be a much harder sell.
